While the Jaguars bested divisional rivals Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 in an unconvincing win, they never really found a spark against the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs last time out.

The addition of wide receiver Calvin Ridley has added a certain element of threat in the offense and the Jags did score four touchdowns against the Colts, but they didn’t reach the end zone against the Chiefs. Meanwhile, 2023 was always going to be another step in the rebuilding process for Houston. The Texans have lost back-to-back games to start the year and it’s looking like a tough old slog ahead.

But there have been positives to take from rookie C.J. Stroud’s first two games under centre for the franchise. The former Ohio State standout got his first (and his second) NFL touchdown in the home defeat to the Colts last week and seems to be developing an arsenal that will come in useful as the season progresses.

Nonetheless, the Jags are big favorites, at -400 on the moneyline and a -8.5 spread.

The Jaguars have more talent across the board than the Houston, have the home advantage, and have the dangling carrot of taking their divisional record to 2-0. Plus, the Texans have allowed 56 points through two weeks and conceded TDs in the red zone at a 78% rate, one of the worst in the league right now. Oh, and they’re utterly beset by injuries.

Put simply, Jacksonville should be a much better team than the Texans, and now it’s just up to them to prove that. They need to sort out their offensive teething issues quickly, and they won’t get many better chance than this. If it begins to click here, they could have a fun day.

Houston have dominated the meetings between these two teams in recent years, going 9-1 straight-up and 7-3 ATS against the Jaguars since 2018.

The results have been bad, but rookie C.J. Stroud threw for 384 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort last week. With the way Stroud is finding his rhythm combined with the giant gap in the spread, taking the Texans to cover even while expecting a Jags win could be a smart play.

Stroud has thrown for 626 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions, and completed 64% of his passes through his first two games of the season and was much improved in Week 2. The Texans’ formbook reads badly so far in 2023, but they’ve shown a fair amount of promise offensively and are poised to steadily improve as Stroud continues to find his feet.

The Jags are also allowing a large number of passing yards so far this year, with their passing defence ranked 25th. Regardless of picking a winner in the game, Stroud could be set to continue his upward trajectory. His passing over/under varies significantly, from 229.5 yards (-115) with DraftKings to 235.5 yards (-114) with FanDuel. Bet365′s over 233.5 yards at +100 looks good value.
