THIS IS WVTM 13 WEATHER IN THE SKY OVER NORTH JEFFERSON COUNTY. EARLIER TODAY, IT LOOKED MORE LIKE A SUMMERTIME AFTERNOON WITH A THUNDERSTORM MOVING THROUGH. THIS THING DROPPED ABOUT A 10TH OF AN INCH OF RAIN IN 5 MINUTES, ACCORDING TO JOHN TALBOTT. ALSO HAD SOME I CALL SCARY LOOKING CLOUDS HANGING OFF THE BOTTOM OF IT. NO REAL WORRIES ABOUT TORNADOES. IT’S GETTING TO THAT TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE WE OFTEN SEE STORMS LIKE THIS THAT HAVE THOSE LOW HANGING CLOUDS THAT ARE JUST A FACTOR OF THE RAIN COOLED AIR BLOWING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THEM. ANOTHER PICTURE, THOUGH, A LITTLE BIT OF A DIFFERENT STORY. UP TO THE NORTH IN ALBERTVILLE, THE BLACK BERRIES HERE IN BLOOM. AND YOU MAY BE WONDERING, THIS COOL SNAP WE’RE ABOUT TO HAVE IS THAT BLACKBERRY WINTER? WELL, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CALL IT THAT BECAUSE AFTER THIS COOL SNAP, WE’RE LIKELY FINISHED WITH IT AND HEADED RIGHT ON INTO MORE OF A SUMMER LIKE FEEL. AND HERE COMES THE COOL AIR TODAY THROUGH BLUNT COLEMAN WALKER, WINSTON COUNTY MARION COUNTY IN THE FIFTIES, RIGHT NOW BIRMINGHAM’S AT 65. IT’S IN THE FORTIES UP HERE TO THE NORTH AND THIS DRY COOL AIR IS GOING TO GET STUCK ALONG THE EAST COAST AND COME RIGHT BACK FOR US. THICKENING UP AROUND HERE, GOING INTO THE WEEKEND. BUT BEYOND THE WEEKEND AND EVEN IN THE END OF NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND THAT, I THINK TEMPERATURES WILL BE WELL ABOVE AVERAGE. SO WE ARE ESSENTIALLY FINISHED WITH ANY SORT OF WINTERTIME WEATHER. IF YOU’VE BEEN WORRIED ABOUT THE GROWING SEASON, THE FINAL FREEZE USUALLY HAPPENS MARCH 25TH, THE LAST FROST, USUALLY AROUND APRIL 7TH. SO IF YOU’RE READY TO SET SOME PLANTS OUT, I THINK YOU’RE IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE. SO FOR TONIGHT, IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO DO SOME GARDENING IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS, THE WATERING WILL BE FREE BECAUSE THERE’S PLENTY OF RAIN ON THE WAY FOR US. A LOT MORE OUT TO THE SOUTH AND WEST. AND AS THIS SETS UP OVER TOP OF ALABAMA IN COMING DAYS, A VERY GOOD CHANCE THAT WE ALL GET A GOOD SOAKING. NOW, TOMORROW, IT’S SPOTTY SHOWERS, UPPER FIFTIES IN THE MORNING. 67 IN THE AFTERNOON. HIT OR MISS RAIN. BUT THEN FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY, THE ISSUE BECOMES MORE HEAVY RAIN THAN ANYTHING. OCCASIONAL HEAVY RAIN, BREEZY AND CHILLY, LOCALIZED FLOODING POSSIBLE. AND WITHIN THIS ZONE ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL ALABAMA, IT’S POSSIBLE THAT WE CAN HAVE A FEW WIND GUSTS THAT GO OVER 25 OR 30 MILES PER HOUR TO GO WITH THE SOAKING RAIN AND THE CHILL. LOOK AT THAT SATURDAY, THE HIGH ONLY AT 58 DEGREES. BY SUNDAY MORNING FOR SUNRISE SERVICES. IT’LL BE IN THE MID TO UPPER FORTIES WITH AN EAST WIND AROUND 10 TO 15 EASTER SUNDAY AFTERNOON CLOSE TO 6570 DEGREES, WARMING UP A LITTLE BIT NEXT WEEK WITH SOME MORE WET WEATHER TOWARD NE

Rainy, breezy and cooler weather for Good Friday and Saturday

Get set for a soaking wet Good Friday and Saturday, and it gets much cooler, too. Check the video forecast for the latest.HERE COMES THE RAIN WHEN: several waves of rain and a few embedded thunderstorms develop now through Saturday afternoon. The heaviest, most persistent rain begins Friday afternoon and keeps pouring through midday Saturday. WHERE AND HOW MUCH? Most of North and Central Alabama get soaked with at least one inch of rain through Saturday afternoon; however, a narrow, heavier stripe of rain (up to 2”) sets up near Interstate 59 Friday night into Saturday morning. Some minor, short-term flooding of creeks and streams is possible through Saturday night. RAIN AND WIND? Yes. It looks breezy, wet, and chilly Friday afternoon through Saturday. Expect a steady rain through midday Saturday, a persistent east wind around 10 to 20 miles per hour, and temperatures that struggle to rise above 55 to 60 in the afternoon. That's why Saturday is an Impact Day.GOOD FRIDAY SPECIFICSRain has been persistent lately northwest of Birmingham. We can remove that last part, the ‘mainly northwest of Birmingham’ overnight into Friday morning because slow-moving front finally begins to move southeast. That sets up occasional showers and a few spotty, non-severe storms through the day.Expect highs in the 50s and 60s north of Birmingham, but it stays in the 70s south of the metro area into Chilton, Coosa, Talladega, and even parts of Clay and Calhoun Counties.EASTER WEEKEND IMPACT WEATHER⚠️ SATURDAY: WHAT TO EXPECT ⚠️Saturday is an Impact Day because, simply put, the weather is going to be annoying. It will be windy, chilly and wet: persistent rain through midday, gusts over 20 MPH, and temperatures that hover in the 50s all day long.Easter Sunday sunrise services look damp and chilly: temperatures around 6 AM in the 45–50-degree range, low clouds and a little drizzle possible (especially east of Birmingham). It gets drier and a little milder through the day; expect highs in the mid-60s with a mostly cloudy sky and an east wind around 10 to 20 miles per hour.A cool air ‘wedge’ sets up for the weekend and early part of next week, and that means more cooler-than-normal weather through at least Tuesday. At this point, we see nothing ‘cold’ coming soon, so it appears safe to go ahead with springtime gardening as no more frosts or freezes are expected.Later into the week, a slow-moving system gets left behind by the jet stream; a cut-off low near the Gulf Coast will hold some sway over rain chances and temperatures. The farther north it drifts, the more likely it is that Central Alabama gets another wet, cool period from next Thursday through the weekend.CLICK TO SEE THE 7-DAY FORECASTGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates.—STAY WEATHER AWAREGet the free WVTM 13 app and turn on the alerts for the latest weather updates. For the latest Birmingham weather information and central Alabama's certified most accurate forecast, watch WVTM 13 News.Current Weather ConditionsHourly Forecast | 10-Day ForecastInteractive RadarBirmingham SkycamsLive Doppler RadarSign Up For Email Weather AlertsDownload the WVTM 13 AppDon't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
