Shelby County community left processing tragic helicopter crash

A medical helicopter crashed along Bear Creek Road in north Shelby County on Sunday, killing two of the three crew members on-board.Nicole Allen lives just down the road from where it happened. "It was even scarier knowing it happened right next to my house and I was up visiting my folks in Florence," Allen recalls. "And you know, coming back down and seeing the police vehicle blocking that end of Bear Creek Road, it was a little scary."A portion of Bear Creek Road near Mountain Oak Drive was closed for nearly 24 hours as crews worked to cleanup the wreckage. "We are a very tight-knit group of responders," Shelby County EMA Director Hub Harvey says. "EMS, fire, law, emergency management in this area and this is a tragic loss for this community." Helicopter pilot Marc Gann and nurse Adam Russell were killed in the crash late Sunday afternoon. A third crew member aboard the chopper was hospitalized. The distressed hiker the Lifesaver 4 medical helicopter crew was trying to help ended up dying later on. "We have a lot of first responders that live in this neighborhood and we have a Facebook page that we talk about a lot of things," Allen explains. "And it was just heartbreaking to hear that you know, someone had lost part of their family trying so hard to help someone else makes it even more heartbreaking." The NTSB arrived at the crash site a few short hours after it happened and is working to figure out exactly what caused the medical helicopter to go down.
