Birmingham’s most famous golfer is back for the Regions Tradition Golf Tournament.

It’s not John Daly, Ernie Els or Colin Montgomerie. No sir — it’s the golfer image on the Regions Center.

Since 2011, Regions Bank, title sponsor of the Regions Tradition, has “lit up” the downtown Birmingham skyline with the image of a golfer.

The 360-degree view has images on all four sides of the Regions Center that can be seen from anywhere near the city center.

April 3rd to May 14th

The special lighting begins on Monday, April 3rd at 8:00PM at 1900 Fifth Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203.

If you want to see the golfer up close, you have got more than a month to visit.  The building is lit each night from 8:00PM to Midnight and again from 5:00AM to 6:00AM in the morning through Sunday, May 14, 2023.

“The Regions Tradition is a world-class event that not only draws people from all over the country – and beyond – to Birmingham, it’s also a vital avenue for supporting charitable work throughout the state. We are proud to once again illuminate the Regions Center with the iconic golfer who symbolizes the return of one of Alabama’s most anticipated annual events.”

History of Regions Center Lighting

The lighting of the Regions Center dates back to the 1970s when the company installed special lights during the Christmas season. The holiday tradition has lasted nearly four decades. Meanwhile, the venerable bank building which stands at 390 feet tall has displayed over the years, not only Christmas decor and the Regions Tradition golfer, but also an American flag during the first Gulf War and an Olympic Torch when the 1996 Olympic Soccer Games were played in Birmingham.

For inquiring minds, the images of the golfer are created manually through a series of colorful gel sleeves that are placed around the white lights atop the windows of Regions Center.

Here are some additional cool facts about the lighting display:

  • More than 2,200 lights on all four sides of the building
  • The images reaches 20 stories—from the 9th to the 29th floors
