Record-setting tourism in the Magic City

The city of Birmingham is building a powerhouse as tourism is generating record numbers this year. Millions of visitors across the country are now staying in our hotels and bringing revenue to our city. This all thanks to the many big events we've had over the past two years. Huge events like the World Games, SEC baseball tournament, the National Association of Black Journalists conference, and the NCAA tournament have made an impact on tourism numbers. According to the latest economic and visitor numbers, Alabama's largest metro area generated a record $2.4 billion in 2022. That number is expected to grow even more this year. “That's a big number and that number translates into new taxes that come into Birmingham and Jefferson county. It pays for a lot of the services that we as residents will have to pay for if we didn't have that many visitors paying those kinds of taxes,” John Oros said. The greater Birmingham tourism industry also brings in more than 50,000 full-time jobs.
