A Mobile County jury found Samuel Darrington guilty of shooting a man 10 times in front of his children in May 2020, the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Evidence presented at trial showed 27-year-old Xavier Sowels-Portlock was putting his children in his car as the prepared to leave Sunset Bayou Apartments on May 20, 2020, when Darrington approached and shot him.

Sowels-Portlock was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The added element of this crime being committed in front of children makes the circumstances around this death even more tragic,” said Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood. “We are very thankful the jury saw the defendant’s guilt.”

Darrington, 30, is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 27.
