Home invasion suspect fatally shot by Blount County resident

A man is dead after an attempted home invasion gone wrong in Blount County.On Friday, deputies responded to a 911 call for an attempted breaking and entering at a home in Highland Lake, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.A resident of the home had gone out to check the mailbox when she saw 29-year-old William Cody Vaughn approaching her in a "hurried manner."WVTM 13 On The Go: Download our app for freeThe woman then ran back inside her home and locked the door, after which Vaughn attempted to make entry.Vaughn had reportedly been breaking into, and attempting to break into area homes throughout the day. Deputies were actively searching for him at the time of the incident.Before deputies could arrive, the woman's husband returned home to find Vaughn had broken into his vehicle. On Friday, deputies responded to a 911 call for an attempted breaking and entering at a home in Highland Lake, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.

A resident of the home had gone out to check the mailbox when she saw 29-year-old William Cody Vaughn approaching her in a "hurried manner."

The woman then ran back inside her home and locked the door, after which Vaughn attempted to make entry.

Vaughn had reportedly been breaking into, and attempting to break into area homes throughout the day. Deputies were actively searching for him at the time of the incident.

Before deputies could arrive, the woman's husband returned home to find Vaughn had broken into his vehicle. Not knowing that his wife had already called 911, he confronted Vaughn.

Just as deputies arrived at the scene the homeowner shot Vaughn, who had pulled out his own gun during the confrontation.

He was taken by Life Flight to UAB Hospital where he later died.

No charges have been filed at this time.
