YOUNG GIRLS CONFIDENCE THROUGH READING AND WRITING. WE ARE ON CHAPTER 12 OF SINCERELY, CECILY, SO I’LL GIVE YOU ALL SOME TIME TO GO TO THAT CHAPTER. OR SHE’S TRYING TO FIND HERSELF, WHICH A LOT OF THE GIRLS ARE. RATHER, IT’S CULTURE, WHETHER IT’S HAIR, WHETHER IT’S CLOTHES AROUND THE WAY GIRLS BOOK CLUB WAS FOUNDED BY DANA MAISHA. SHE HAD A VISION. SHE LOVES TO READ. SHE’S ALWAYS INSPIRED BY HER HISTORICAL ROOTS AND AUTHORS AND PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE HER. MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY IN 2021 DUE TO COVID 19 COMPLICATIONS, BUT NOW HER SISTERS, SHAKIRA, IS CARRYING ON HER LEGACY. I DON’T ALWAYS JUST GO WITH THE FLOW. I GO WITH MY SLOW ONCE A WEEK. GIRLS AGES 8 TO 14 MEET ON ZOOM. HER HAIR IS STRAIGHT AND LONG, JUST LIKE RAYMOND’S. NEITHER OF THE HAIR IS LIKE MINE. SUPER ZAPOTEC WITH CORKSCREW CURLS WHEN IT’S NOT BRAIDED. THE MEETINGS GOING BEYOND THE BINDINGS OF THE BOOK, ENCOURAGING THE GIRLS TO FIND CONFIDENCE THROUGH JOURNALING AND UNIQUE. WHEN I WEAR MY CLOTHES BECAUSE I LOVE THE WAY I PUT THEM TOGETHER. I’M CREATIVE AND PRETTY SMART. I TRY MY HARDEST ON THINGS. I’M TIRED OF MYSELF FOR BEING. BEING ABLE TO FORGIVE MYSELF ABOUT MISTAKES THAT I’VE MADE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING A. 17 YEAR OLD SHAPE. OURAY RUNS THE MEETINGS. WHAT DOES PREPARATION LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? HOW DO YOU PREPARE TO DEAL WITH THIS GROUP OF GIRLS? I HAVE PRE-WRITTEN CHECK IN QUESTIONS, SO I’LL BE PREPARED FOR THAT. BUT REALLY, I KIND OF JUST TAKE IT. HOWEVER, THE MEETING GOES AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME. AND ONCE THE BOOK’S CLOSED FOR THE DAY, EACH MEETING ENDING WITH THE GIRLS COMPLIMENTING THEMSELVES AND SOMEONE ELSE IN THE GROUP. AND I LOVE YOU HAIR. LOVE YOU HERE. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO COME INTO SHAPE. BECAUSE I LOVE HOW YOU’VE BEEN KEEPING US TOGETHER AND SUPPORT YOURSELVES. ALL OF YOU DID GREAT. AMAZING. AND THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO OPEN AND SHARING. A Sacramento, California, book club is working to highlight women by inspiring the younger generation.The Around The Way Girls Book Club is more than a group, it’s a safe space for young women ages 8 to 13 to grow and develop.A program put on by the Escape Velocity Foundation, the book club was founded by Dana Maeshia, who passed away in 2021 due to COVID-19 complications. Now, her sister Shirkeri Badger is carrying on her legacy.Once a week, the girls meet on Zoom, and it goes beyond the bindings of the book and encourages the girls to express themselves through journaling. Shay Poree, 17, runs the meetings."I have pre-written check-in questions so I'll be prepared for that, but really I just kind of take it however the meeting goes at that moment and time," Poree said. Once books close for the day, each meeting ends with the girls complimenting themselves and someone else in the group.
