Spring storms explode again across Alabama this week

SO YOU’LL KNOW. FIRST. THIS IS WVTM. 13 WEATHER. SO THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY ACTIVE SEVERE WEATHER YEAR THUS FAR, GOING BACK TO EARLY JANUARY. WE’VE HAD MULTIPLE WAVES OF TORNADOES, SOME OF THEM SIGNIFICANT. AND SO FAR THE TOTAL OF TORNADOES REPORTED IN ALABAMA, ABOUT 48. NOW, THAT NUMBER IS PROBABLY GOING TO CHANGE EITHER TO GO UP OR DOWN AS MAYBE A FEW PATHS ARE CONNECTED AND BECOME ONE LONG PATH. BUT THAT’S REALLY CLOSE TO BEING AN AVERAGE 12 MONTH PERIOD IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA. TYPICALLY, WE WOULD HAVE ABOUT 50 TO 60 TORNADOES IN A GIVEN YEAR. AND THIS IS A MAP SHOWING WHERE MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN GOING ALL THE WAY FROM THE GULF COAST DOWN TOWARD THE WIREGRASS. HOUSTON COUNTY, UP INTO THE CLIO AREA, MONTGOMERY. AND THEN, OF COURSE, WE HAD THOSE FROM OLD KINGSTON UP THROUGH ALEXANDER CITY, AS WELL AS THAT ONE BETWEEN UTAH AND DUNCANVILLE BACK IN JANUARY. AND THEN TO THE NORTH, WE’VE HAD EVEN MORE, INCLUDING THE F3 THAT HIT HAZEL GREEN BACK ON SATURDAY MORNING. SO WE’RE JUST GETTING INTO APRIL, WHICH IS BEGINNING THE PEAK OF SEVERE WEATHER SEASON. HOPEFULLY WE DON’T HAVE TO ADD TOO MANY MORE TO THAT HIGH NUMBER THAT WE ALREADY HAVE. AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO BE DOING IT TONIGHT OR TOMORROW. WE DO EXPECT A FEW SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS DURING THE DAY TUESDAY, BUT MOST OF THEM WILL BE EAST OF BIRMINGHAM. AND ALTHOUGH SOME OF THEM COULD HAVE SOME LOCALIZED HEAVY RAIN, SOME SMALL HAIL, SOME LIGHTNING, WE DON’T EXPECT WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER AROUND HERE UP TO THE NORTHWEST. IT’S GOING TO BE A DIFFERENT STORY AS THAT NEXT BIG STORM SYSTEM COMES IN. TWO BIG SPOTS HERE TO WATCH, A MODERATE RISK EAST OF DES MOINES, ANOTHER ONE SOUTH OF SPRINGFIELD AND WEST OF LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS. A MAJOR TORNADO OUTBREAK HERE. THERE’S EVEN A POSSIBILITY THAT ANOTHER HIGH RISK COULD BE ISSUED OUT TO OUR WEST. BUT BY THE TIME IT GETS TO US, LATE WEDNESDAY, EARLY THURSDAY, IT’S A MARGIN, OLD RISK OR A LOW END THREAT OF SOME GUSTY WINDS, SOME HAIL OR EVEN A FEW STORMS THAT COULD ROTATE AND BE MUGGY TONIGHT. AND THERE’S ALREADY SOME PATCHY FOG, ESPECIALLY ON THE RIDGE TOPS 65 IN THE MORNING, 85 TOMORROW AFTERNOON, A LOT HOTTER FOR TUESDAY. AND WEDNESDAY. IT WAS ONLY IN THE SIXTIES. TODAY WE GET THESE ISOLATED STORMS BOTH DAYS. OCCASIONALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR THEY CAN PRODUCE SOME SMALL HAIL. NOT EXPECTING A LOT THERE. HEAVIER STORMS ARRIVING ON THURSDAY, MOSTLY NORTHWEST OF BIRMINGHAM. AND THEN SCATTERED SHOWERS ARE GOING TO CONTINUE THROUGH FRIDAY AS WELL AS SATURDAY IN POTENTIALLY EASTER SUNDAY AS

Spring storms explode again across Alabama this week

Rainy, stormy periods in a very warm, humid springtime Easter week in Alabama. Temperatures make a jump to the 80s on Tuesday, but rain cools it down again soon. Check the video forecast for the latest.WARM THROUGH WEDNESDAYBirmingham usually does not come near 90°F until the end of April or first of May, and the temperature typically stays below 90°F until the last week of May. A few spots in West Alabama may make a run at 90°F on Tuesday and Wednesday with a hot, humid air mass blowing in from the south through midweek: Muggy mornings: expect low temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings down in the 60s. That’s still comfortable, but it is a noticeable change in humidity. Sticky days: too cool for you recently? You’re in luck! Temperatures soar to around 84 to 88 degrees both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons with a south-southwest breeze. Scattered storms? A few isolated showers or a brief thunderstorm could develop Tuesday. We have plenty of fuel to sustain anything that can find a good reason to get going Tuesday afternoon and evening. (That ‘something’ being some small-scale wave to kick it off.) Any storms that develop could produce some hail, gusty winds and intense lightning! We see a much better chance of rain and some thunderstorms on Wednesday and Wednesday night: especially northwest of the Birmingham area.SPRING STORMS THROUGH EASTER SUNDAYThe old saying goes “April showers bring May flowers.” Alabama should have a lot of May flowers this year with the stormy pattern through at least the first week to 10 days of April. Starting Wednesday afternoon, rain and thunderstorms come in waves through Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday. Locally-heavy rainfall may add up to more than 2-3 inches in some spots by Sunday afternoon; isolated lesser and greater amounts are possible due to the scattered, uneven nature of the downpours.Of all these stormy waves, right now only Thursday looks to have a real threat of any severe weather for Alabama. That’s why Wednesday night - Thursday is an ‘IMPACT DAY’ meaning that we’ll be watching some heavy storms and keeping an eye out for any severe weather threat. ⚠️ WEDNESDAY NIGHT – THURSDAY AM: a slow-moving batch of heavy thunderstorms moves in from the northwest late Wednesday afternoon into the evening. Most of the activity stays northwest of Birmingham through early Thursday morning, and then it slowly moves southeast throughout the day. The risk of severe weather is MARGINAL for North and West Alabama through 7 AM Thursday. After Thursday’s showers and storms dissipate in the evening, more waves of rain develop on Friday, Saturday and on Sunday.Timing out these rounds of showers for specific Easter-related events will be very difficult days in advance, so if you have Easter Egg Hunts, Sunrise Services, or other outdoor plans, be sure you are plugged into more than just the numbers on the WVTM 13 app or the 7-day forecast!
