ARRESTED: Serial armed robbery suspect accused of targeting Birmingham's Hispanic community

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

UPDATE: April 6:

The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) reported an arrest has been made of suspect Jakobie Smith, 21.

The BPD said the U.S. Marshal's Service took Smith into custody, after he tried to escape into an attic and later into a basement at a house in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Agents used gas to take him into custody.

The police department says Smith is in the Gwinnett County Jail, awaiting extradition to Jefferson County.

The BPD says Smith is identified as a suspect in the armed robberies of numerous Hispanic victims dating back to October 2022.

Jan. 5:

A police investigation is ongoing to find a second suspect accused of targeting members of Birmingham's Hispanic community in armed robberies.

According to news releases from Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department, one suspect has been identified as Evontay Blevins, 19, of Birmingham.

Fitzgerald says detectives have so far obtained at least 32 warrants for robbery against Blevins.

Blevins was booked into the county jail in November and remains there with a $2 million bond.

Officer Fitzgerald says the second suspect also faces at least 32 robberies warrants and remains on the run at this time.

The BPD is searching for Jakobie Smith, 20, and is believed to be armed and dangerous.
